Devon Claim 2nd at 2017 Inter County Championships – Report

Following promotion to Division 1 last year, the Devon County Team consisting of swimmers from Mount Kelly, Plymouth Leander, Dartmoor Darts, Devonport and Paignton, surprised their competitors at the 2017 Inter County Championships in Sheffield storming to 2nd place – Devon’s best ever result in the history of the competition!

Devon started strong with a victory in the first event of the day courtesy of Mount Kelly’s Athena Clayson in the 16/17 Years 100m Freestyle. This was backed up by a further 9 Top 5 individual finishes from Cameron Williams in the 12/13 Years 100m Breaststroke (2nd), Sam Dailley in the 16/17 Years 100m Butterfly (3rd), Savanna Best in the 16/17 Years 100m Breaststroke (3rd), Kaylee Dekker in the 14/15 Years 100m Freestyle (4th), Reid Jones in the 14/15 Years 100m Butterfly (4th) and 100m Freestyle (5th), Honey Osrin in the 14/15 Years 100m Backstroke (4th) Tegan Drew in the 16/17 Years 100m Backstroke (5th) and Ra’eez Warley in the 14/15 Years 100m Backstroke (5th)

Going into the final relay events Devon were in 4th place in a battle with Lancashire and Scotland West for a podium finish. However, this is where Devon really came in to their own and the teams rallied together recording wins in both the Male 16/17 Years Medley Relay (Harry Noble, Ollie Taverner, Sam Dailley, James Watson) and Female 16/17 Years Medley Relay (Athena Clayson, Savanna Best, Tegan Drew and Madelyn Moore) to elevate the team to 3rd with only the 6×50 Freestyle Cannon remaining.

Devon finished the competition as they had started, swimming to an emphatic victory in the Mixed 6 x 50 Freestyle Relay consisting of James Watson, Reid Jones, Aiden Symons-Brown, Ella Bardgett, Kaylee Dekker and Madelyn Moore. This result ensure Devon finished a brilliant 2nd place only just behind last year’s winners Yorkshire.

Other swimmers contributing to the success of the Devon Team this year were: Bella Hodges, Emily Morgan-Hughes, Oriana Noel, Hubert Gdaniec, Edward Brown, David O’Loughlin, Georgina Dennis, Lana Broekhoven, Duru Tanir, Sandor Apponyi, Ben Fannon and Ben Harrison.

Thanks also go to the County Staff for their contribution to this great result for Devon:

Greg King (Head Coach), Glen Currie (Assistant Coach), Lynn Rayment (Team Manager), Sarah Drew (Chaperone), as well as our travelling President Veronica Blackmore and travelling Official Rebecca Jenkinson.
